Online Backup

How important is your data?

First, lets define Data:

For a home user it could be
  • Digital Pictures
  • Music
  • Documents, like resume's, homework, or financial transactions.
  • It would also include e-mail.
    • If you have e-mail through Comcast, or ATT, or Road Runner, typically that is setup in a POP3 scenario.  The way that works is the e-mail comes in to your ISP's server, and your e-mail client (Outlook) goes out and 'fetches' that e-mail and downloads it to your hard drive.  At that moment, the e-mail is no longer the responsibility of your ISP, and in most cases they can not retrieve it.  Once its on your hard drive, it's your responsibility to back it up, and make sure that it's secure.  If your hard drive crashes and you don't have a backup, then your e-mail is gone forever, along with pictures, music, and any financial data on your hard drive.
For a corporation it could be:
  • Corporate e-mail (Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, Lotus Notes)
  • Corporate databases (Oracle, SQL, MySQL)
  • User Files
  • Corporate Financial data
Now, ask yourself, what would I do if my hard drive crashed on my local computer.  For Corporate users, ask yourself, what would happen if my server crashed.  Would I be able to recover from a total disaster at my workplace; Fire, Tornado, Theft?

Statistics show that:
  • 6% of all PC's will crash in a given year.  In the U.S., that works out to approximately 800,000 pc's that will crash, this year alone.
  • 30% of all businesses that have a major disaster (Fire, Tornado, etc) go out of business within a year.  70% go out of business within 5 years.  It's nearly impossible to recover from a major data loss.
  • 35% of companies that use tape backups fail to test them.  Of those that do, 77% have found failures in their backup tapes.
  • Every week, 140,000 hard drives crash in the United States.
  • Shipping a hard drive off for recover at a data recovery facility can cost over $5000 and it's not guaranteed.
Tape Backup
  • Gartner Group estimates that 1 in 10 recovery images on tape is unrecoverable from the large enterprise point of view.  They have gone on to say  that data up to one year old has a 10-15% failure rate and the failure rate of data five or more years old is 40-45%
  • 7-10 small firms that experience a major data loss goes out of business
  • Using tape backups requires additional work on your part.  The tape has to be changed daily.  The tape has to be taken offsite daily.  In most cases, the data is NOT encrypted before being written to tape.  If that tape is lost, then all of your data can be stolen within a matter of hours.
  • Even if you do successfully backup to tape - the restore time from an online service like ours is incredibly faster than tape.  It's estimated that to restore 10TB of data from disk will take 2.5hours.  To recover the same amount of data from tape would take 4 days.  If you are a local customer, and you have a large amount of data, We will put that data on an external hard drive and drive it to your location to speed up the recovery process.
  • If your amount of data outgrows your current tape size, then you will need to purchase a new tape drive, as well as a whole new rotation of tapes.  If your amount of data grows beyond your disk quota, then you just need to request more disk quota from us.
SECURITY
  • The data is compressed and encrypted at YOUR location, before it even comes to our location.  This ensures that no one at CSBCS will have access to your data.  This also ensures that if anyone is trying to steal the data as it's transferred, they will not have access to it.
  • The data is Encrypted using 256Bit Military Grade Encryption.
  • The data is also kept in two SECURE locations.  The main location is the South Side of Indianapolis.  There is also an offsite location in the New Albany area.  Again, this data is encrypted, and no one has the ability to access it.  The recent tornado's in Mississippi show the importance of having the data 100 miles away.

Don't be a statistic.  Call or e-mail today and help us get you setup with online backup.  Make your data safe, secure, and online.
